September 2009 Chapter Meeting

Our President opens the first Technical Meeting of the year.   Greg Crowe with Bon Secours St. Francis Health System provided us information on the H1N1 virus.

Turnout for the first meeting of the year was great. Thanks to Ed Bopp and Fluor for hosting us this year!   Betty Harris with ATC Associates was the meeting sponsor. Anyone wishing to sponsor a meeting should contact Betty.

Good speaker, host, turnout, food, cookies; what a way to start the year!   Education and networking are what ASSE is all about.

Thank you for sponsoring lunch, ATC Associates and Betty Harris!

Piedmont Chapter Night Out: Greenville Drive

Many thanks to Kurt Rayburg for scheduling our Piedmont Chapter Night Out with the Greenville Drive.   After a brief pre-game summer shower, the evening turned out perfect.

Representing the Piedmont Chapter, Kurt Rayburg throws out the first pitch.   Kurt got us suites for the evening, we would have liked to see the rain.

Turnout was great! This event gave out membership an opportunity to see those who cannot make the noon technical meetings.   Safety topic of the day: Side effects of hot dog chili!

Bill Geddings must have taken this angle shot!   Western Carolina students again participating in our chapter activities.

Why do chapter presidents always have their photo with the attractive youth?   Our student affairs chair spends time with Western Carolina students.

There were at least two home runs over the Green Monster!

Region VI Vice President Jim Morris Visits Fenway Park

In appreciation of Kurt Rayburg scheduling our Piedmont Chapter Night Out with the Greenville Drive, two tickets were given to the chapter to attend a Boston Red Sox home game.   Jim Morris, Region VI VP was able to use the Boston Red Sox tickets provided by the Greenville Drive. Jim graciously thanked Chapter President Bill Geddings.

A view of the Green Monster from field level.   The oldest and most uncomfortable seats in baseball. Look closely and you can see David Day's seat behind the column!

You have to sign the back of the Green Monster!   Jim's wife wearing her hat signed by our BFF "Oil Can". She enjoyed the trip!

President's Message - August 2009

Welcome back for the 2009-2010 Piedmont Chapter year!

May I request a moment of your time to introduce myself? My name is Bill Geddings and I am honored to serve as the Piedmont Chapter President this year. I joined the American Society of Safety Engineers in 2000 and I am employed with Lockheed Martin in Greenville, SC as a Sr. Safety Engineer.

As Safety Professionals we begin the meeting season to increase our technical knowledge and build effective relationships. I want to take a moment to thank our past and current leaders who have served the Chapter. Without these leaders we would not be where we are today.

I remember my early years with the chapter and some of the great leaders we have had, and sadly are losing this year. Past Presidents V. C. “Raja” Rajashekar and Mike Wirt have recently retired and long serving board member Bob Sopko is anticipating his retirement later this year. As we bid our colleagues farewell and watch them ride off into the sunset, let us not forget what they have contributed to us individually, to our chapter and to occupational safety and health.

At the other end of the spectrum, I solicit the help of all Chapter members to finish a goal that was set last year to set up and support Student Sections at Western Carolina and Clemson Universities. Great strides were made over the past two years. The Western Carolina student section should be up and running soon after the students return to school this fall. We still have some work to do with the Clemson University student section and I look forward to working with David Day, Student Section Chair.

The Executive Committee and chairs have been working diligently through the summer months to prepare valuable technical meeting topics and plan for our chapter’s professional development conference (PDC) to be held in March of 2010. We still have a lot of work to do and we have several positions available for those who are willing to serve our chapter. We are seeking individuals to serve as Membership Chair, CEU Coordinator Chair, Socials Chair, Newsletter Editor, and Public Relations Chair. We can also find positions for you to serve on the PDC committee.

I will close with a quote from one of my predecessors and a great friend “You will get more out of it than you put into it.” I found this hard to believe when I heard John Cooper tell me this about the service to the Society, but over the years I found him to be right on the money! Please contact me if I can be of service, if you have questions or want more information about what you can do for the Piedmont Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers. Email me at william.r.geddings@lmco.com or bill@geddings.info or or feel free to call me at 864-230-5932(c) or 864-236-3097(o).

Sincerely,

William R. Geddings, Jr.
President
